This design is derived from an ancient artifact created in either the Old Bering Sea or Okivk cultures- a needlecase fashioned in the shape of a bear. A needlecase was an extremely important item, holding precious needles that allowed a woman to use her skills to fashion clothing vital to survival in the harsh Alaskan climate.
