Yup'ik Dancer II Pin/Pendant by Denise Wallace (5/5; ca. 2006)

This piece was inspired by one of the figures on the Wallace's Yup'ik Dancer Belt, the last full storytelling belt that Denise and Samuel made in 1997.  The tradition of dancing is a way to pass along the culture and this dancer is wearing a seal mask that can be taken off and worn as a separate pendant.  There is a face in the mask which depicts the Inua (spirit) of the seal in human form, and then the dancer's face is underneath the mask.  The details on the body are 14K gold, with petrified dinosaur bone, fossil walrus tusk and moonstones forming the rim at the bottom of the parka with scrimshaw across the bottom.
