Quill Box by Mamie Migwans (Anishinaabe)

Huge box featuring the "Underwater Panther" of myth and folklore. Known in Ojibwe as "Mishipeshu" or "Mishibijiw" it seems to translate as "The Underwater Panther" or "The Great Lynx". This creature was a favorite of Mrs. Migwans and she repeated it in many of her very unique boxes. The box sides have rough bark on the outside, and there are multiple rows of sweetgrass on the top.
